Chess is the reason we come together and it remains at the heart of what we do. From a relaxed game on a Thursday evening to more competitive encounters, we want Brecks & Valleys to be somewhere people can simply enjoy playing good chess.
As the club develops, it should continue to reflect the people who make it what it is. Members should have a meaningful voice in its direction, while those who take on responsibility for the club do so on behalf of the wider membership. We want to build a club whose members value being part of it and whose name means something when they sit down to represent it.
We expect that competition to be accompanied by good sportsmanship, fairness and respect, regardless of age, experience or playing strength. How we play the game and how we represent the club matter alongside the result.
For some, that means ratings, competition and testing themselves against stronger opposition. For others, it simply means playing more regularly and becoming a better player. Brecks & Valleys encourages improvement without prescribing what that should look like. We provide the opportunity to play; what you want to achieve with your chess is up to you.
We want Brecks & Valleys to become part of the local chess community in South Norfolk — somewhere people enjoy spending an evening, make connections through the game and contribute to the life of the club. Our regular chess nights are complemented by occasional social events and other club activities, giving members the opportunity to enjoy the community around the chess as well as the game itself. That combination — chess at the heart, members at the centre and a club with its own character — is what we want Brecks & Valleys to stand for.
