Absolutely. Coming along on your own is completely normal — it’s how the majority of people get started. If you’ve contacted us beforehand, we’ll arrange someone for you to play. If you simply turn up, one of our members will welcome you and help arrange a game.

No. We’ll provide everything you need to play.

Absolutely. It’s becoming increasingly common for players to move from online chess to playing over the board. There’s no requirement to use a clock or record your moves, and we can help with practical things such as setting up the board. Whether you’re a casual online player or a strong, experienced player, you’re very welcome.

Anyone with an interest in chess who would like to play in a friendly, relaxed club environment. We welcome casual players, improving players and experienced competitive players alike.

Yes. We welcome young people from secondary-school age onwards. Those under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. For younger children, there are a number of dedicated junior chess clubs across Norfolk.

No. We encourage you to come along for a couple of sessions before deciding. Most people know fairly quickly whether the club is right for them, but there’s no pressure to join.

No. You don’t need ECF membership or a chess rating to come along or join. We’re not currently part of the Norfolk Chess League, although as the club grows, we hope to enter a team in the near future.

Club nights are centred on playing rather than formal beginner lessons. If you know how the pieces move and can complete a game, you are ready to enquire. If you are still learning the rules, becoming comfortable with the basics first will help you get more from your first visit.

Chess is at the heart of the club. Some members enjoy relaxed, casual games, while others prefer stronger competitive chess and want to improve their game. There’s room for both, with the social side developing naturally around the chess.

Where possible, yes. We’ll try to match players with suitable opponents, although part of the enjoyment of club chess is also playing people of different strengths and styles.

The club is still in its infancy and isn’t currently entered in the Norfolk Chess League. As we grow, we hope to enter a team in the near future for members who would like to play competitive league chess.

Yes — in fact, we encourage it. Regular over-the-board play against different opponents is a great way to improve. We’re not a formal coaching club, but we encourage members to analyse games, discuss positions and learn from one another.

The club is still developing, but we intend to introduce internal tournaments and other chess events as membership grows, alongside our regular club nights.

Annual membership is £50, reduced to £35 for students. Subscriptions fall due each August, with membership charged pro rata for those joining part-way through the year.

No. You’re welcome to come along for a couple of sessions before deciding whether you’d like to join. There’s no charge while you’re finding out if the club is right for you.

Yes. Parking is available at The Crown.

Yes. We actively encourage members to support The Crown, which kindly provides our club facilities. We ask that only food and drink purchased from the premises is consumed during club nights.

No. There’s no commitment to attend every week. We understand that people have work, family and other commitments, so you can come along as often as suits you.

Experienced and stronger players are very welcome. We aim to provide challenging over-the-board chess, good playing conditions and opportunities for competitive games and analysis. As the club grows, we also intend to enter a team in the Norfolk Chess League.

We play in the Garden Room at The Crown, which gives us plenty of space for over-the-board chess. Regular club nights are relaxed and informal rather than run under tournament conditions, and those who prefer a quieter game can play away from the main conversation.

We aim to provide a welcoming, respectful environment for everyone. We ask members and visitors to be courteous at the board, keep noise to a reasonable level, and avoid distractions such as phone use during games. We also encourage good sportsmanship (including handshakes where appropriate) and respectful post-game discussion. Any concerns can be raised with a committee member or organiser and will be handled discreetly.

Club nights are casual & flexible. Games are typically friendly and arranged on the night, using rapid or casual time controls to suit the players involved. If both players prefer, we can also set longer games for deeper practice, and we’re happy to accommodate chess clocks and agreed time settings.

Our name reflects the landscape and communities of the area we serve. From the distinctive heathland and sandy landscapes of the Brecks to the lowland river valleys that run through this part of Norfolk, the name reflects the character of the wider area around us.

We are a regional chess club, bringing together players from towns, villages and communities across the Brecks and surrounding valleys, with Great Ellingham at its heart.

The club is based at The Crown in Great Ellingham, near Attleborough, and welcomes players from across South Norfolk and Breckland. Our main catchment includes Wymondham, Hethersett, Mulbarton, Watton, Hingham, Dereham, Thetford, Diss, Long Stratton and Swaffham. We also welcome players from surrounding communities including Rockland All Saints, Caston, Shipdham, Carbrooke, Besthorpe, Spooner Row, Old Buckenham, New Buckenham, Banham, Kenninghall, East Harling, Deopham, Wicklewood and Morley.
