Do I need previous chess-club experience?
No. Start at the standard you are now. If you know the moves and can play a game, previous club experience is not required. Playing strength helps us arrange a suitable game; it does not determine the welcome or respect you receive.
What happens on my first visit?
Start with a conversation so we know a little about your chess. We will reply personally, confirm the practical details and, where practical, arrange a suitable opponent. When you arrive, someone will greet you, introduce you and help get your first game under way.
When and where does the club meet?
Club nights are held in the Garden Room at The Crown, Great Ellingham, from 7.00 pm on Thursdays except the first Thursday of each month. Opening night is Thursday 10 September 2026 at 7.00 pm. Parking is available at the rear of The Crown.
Who is Brecks & Valleys for?
The club welcomes online players trying over-the-board chess, players returning after a break, players seeking more challenge or improvement, and experienced or competitive players looking for worthwhile face-to-face games. The club is not primarily intended as a complete-beginner teaching service.
Can I simply turn up?
Yes, although contacting us beforehand is encouraged. A short conversation gives us the best chance to answer your questions, be ready to welcome you and arrange a suitable first game.
What should I bring?
Nothing is required for the chess itself. Boards, pieces and other equipment are supplied. You are welcome to bring your own clock or scorebook if you prefer, but neither is required for an ordinary club game.
