Brecks & Valleys is a new chess club serving South Norfolk and Breckland, based at The Crown in Great Ellingham. Established in 2026, it was created to bring regular over-the-board chess to players across the area.
Brecks & Valleys was established with the benefit of real, practical experience running club chess — organising regular nights, welcoming new players and building the kind of environment people keep coming back to. That experience has shaped how the club is organised and what we want a well-run night of club chess to look like.
Starting a new club gives us the opportunity to build something from the ground up and make deliberate decisions about its home, identity, organisation and how it develops. We want club evenings to feel relaxed without being casual about how the club itself is run. Good communication, consistency and organisation behind the scenes all matter.
Chess has changed considerably in recent years. Online platforms mean people can play whenever and wherever they like, yet sitting across the board from an opponent remains a very different experience. Brecks & Valleys was created with that modern chess landscape in mind — keeping regular over-the-board chess at its heart while recognising that people now find their way into club chess through many different routes. We're not trying to reinvent chess. We're creating more opportunities to play it face-to-face.
Brecks & Valleys isn't tied to a single town. It's a regional club for South Norfolk and Breckland, with Great Ellingham as its home. Our name reflects that wider identity — the distinctive Brecks and the lowland river valleys that help shape this part of Norfolk.
